Dealing with the Mentee’s Family

The mentee’s family is a part of her life and that comes as a package. As a mentor, the need to work with and carry the family along too is always there, especially in an Indian social and cultural environment. The mentor does not have any responsibility for what happens in the family, but to the extent that it influences the mentee’s professional life, it is to be taken into consideration. It is vital to remember that the focus should always be the mentee.

In working with the mentee, it is good to keep the mentee’s family in the loop too. Helping the mentee deal with issues relating to the family should be done with discretion and caution. Also, in helping the mentee make decisions relating to personal life and the family, care must be taken in not crossing mutually understood and accepted boundaries. In Indian culture and environment, the family would hold the mentor in high esteem. It is important to live up to that respect and image. Any misunderstanding can be quite terrible for the mentoring process.

The family would have definite role and value in the life of the mentee and she in theirs. The mentor has no right, in any form, to usurp the role and position of the family in the mentee’s life. Even if the mentee so desires, it still is a danger area and should be tread with extreme caution. Ideally, stay out when the alarms go off.
